Medi-Cal pays for health care for certain eligible
residents. Medi-Cal is the California state version
of the Federal Medicaid program.

Medi-Cal is funded by state and federal taxes. CalWORKS
families are automatically eligible for Medi-Cal.

Any person has the right to apply for Medi-Cal. Even if
you are working, own a home or are married,
you may be eligible for Medi-Cal.

Certain conditions must be met to qualify for the program.
Because there are many facets to Medi-Cal, it is
important for anyone in need to contact and speak
to a Medi-Cal Eligibility Worker.

Special Programs:

Pregnant women who cannot afford to pay for health care may
be eligible for Medi-Cal to help pay for medical expenses
for the mother and baby. Many times Medi-Cal is available at no
cost to the mother, even if she has income.

Once eligible for Medi-Cal, increases in a family’s income will not
be counted for pregnancy related services. Participants may be
eligible during pregnancy and for the baby’s first year of life.
Pregnancy is considered an immediate medical need. A person
applying for Medi-Cal should tell the Eligibility Worker if she has a
medical appointment soon.

Children may get Medi-Cal at no cost, if income requirements
are met. There are various programs available depending
on the age of the child:

Infants
Children ages 1 through 6
Children ages 6 through 19

Confidential Medical Services Available to Persons Under
Age 21, unmarried, and living with their parents may receive
certain confidential medical services. Under the Minor Consent
Program. Parental consent is not needed to determine eligibility.
Medical services under the special program are those, which
relate to family planning, pregnancy, drug/alcohol abuse,
venereal disease and other sexually transmitted diseases,
sexual assault, and patient mental health, which
includes child, or sexual abuse.

What Services are Available with Medi-Cal?:

Medi-Cal pays for many kinds of medical expenses. Your medical
provider will know what services are available, cost and
what requires a "co-payment". A co-payment of $1.00 may be
required each time a medical service is received,
and $5.00 may be required for a hospital emergency room
visit if an emergency service is not needed.

County Medical Services Program (CMSP)

CMSP is a county medical assistance program that serves the
Medically Indigent Adult, ages 21-64 who are not eligible for
Medi-Cal, but who are unable to pay for their health services.
CMSP is funded and administered by the county.
CMSP is not a Medi-Cal program.
