The primary goal of the San Benito County Health and Human Services Agency, Welfare Fraud Unit, is to maintain the integrity of the Welfare System. The Welfare Fraud unit was formed in response to a State mandate. This requires that the San Benito County Welfare Fraud Unit and the San Benito County District Attorney’s Office investigate offenders who violate the laws that regulate the Welfare System. Welfare Fraud is committed when persons make false statements and/or misrepresent facts, or situations that are not reported to the Department of Social Services in order obtain Public Funds or Benefits for which they would not otherwise be eligible to receive. The Welfare Fraud Unit through community complaints, Child Support Services, the Department of Social Services and a variety of other sources receives allegations of Welfare Fraud and related Public Assistance Fraud. The Welfare Fraud Unit reviews and evaluates every reported allegation of fraud. The goals of this Unit include fraud prevention and protection of Public funds from alleged misuse.
